Music

Rachel Brackett , Music Teacher

Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm!

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Welcome to the Lakeview Music program! Our primary objective as your child’s elementary music teacher is to provide students with a highly diverse and entirely positive exposure to music and the arts. We want our students to leave elementary school with a love and appreciation for the arts so that they can enjoy and benefit from a life-long love of music, whether as a performer or an audience member.

We design our curriculum based on the state and National arts and music standards using the LWSD’s recently adopted curriculum. In music class we use multiple modalities to discover musical content as well as incorporate a multi-arts approach that involves dance/movement, drama and visual arts. We also believe in the power of interdisciplinary connections, so we often explore reading, writing, math, science and social studies through musical learning. While each grade focuses on specific musical concepts, units of study and curricular goals, every student at Lakeview will have the opportunity to sing, play percussion instruments, dance and explore creative movement, read and compose musical notation, study music from around the world, diverse composers, music history, and practice music theory through a variety of activities. Third graders have the opportunity to learn the recorder, fourth graders play African drums and xylophones, and fifth graders will have the joy of playing the ukulele! Children are assessed based on their behavior, effort and participation in class.

Students have opportunities to participate in music outside of the classroom as well. They can join band or orchestra starting in fourth grade and choir here at Lakeview. Intermediate Choir (3rd - 5thgrade) meets in the fall/winter and Primary choir (1st and 2nd grade) meets March through May. More information will come home about these special groups. In addition to choir and instrumental music, students will perform at a variety of assemblies and special events throughout the year. We also have “talent sharing day” in music class throughout the year.   If you have any questions about the music program at Lakeview please feel free to e-mail Mrs. Brackett or send her a message on ParentSquare.  We are always open to learning about music from your home or culture or having parents share music in class, so if you play an instrument or want to share about music or arts from your culture, we would love to have you!
