Welcome to the Lakeview music program!
Music is for everyone, “When you sing from your heart you are always in tune!” – Glen Hansard. We want our students to leave elementary school with a love and appreciation for the arts so that they can enjoy and benefit from a life-long love of music, whether as a performer or an audience member. The one rule in my classroom is “Be a performer (not a show-off),” which means always do your best work and participate with enthusiasm!
In music class we explore the arts through singing, instruments, dance/creative movement, drama and visual arts. We also believe in the power of interdisciplinary connections, so we often explore reading, writing, math, science and social studies through musical learning. Each grade focuses on specific musical concepts, units of study and curricular goals. We read and compose musical notation, study music from around the world, diverse composers, music history, and practice music theory through a variety of activities. Third graders have the opportunity to learn the recorder, fourth graders play African drums and barred instruments, and fifth graders will have the joy of playing the ukulele! Children are assessed based on their behavior, effort and participation in class. All students will sing and perform at a variety of assemblies and special events throughout the year. We also have periodic informal “talent sharing” days in music class (bring in music or an instrument/artistic skill you are learning outside of class).
If you have any questions about the music program, please feel free to e-mail Mrs. Brackett or send her a message on ParentSquare. I am always open to learning about music from your home or culture and even having parents perform music in class or at school events, so if you play an instrument or want to share about music that is meaningful to your family, I would love to hear from you!
With a song in my heart,
Rachel Brackett
